WARM Weavers is a group of members from our Waupaca Area Regional Minsitry (WARM) churches who are working to create plarn sleeping mats to be distributed by Midwest Mission.
Are you looking for a positve way to recylce plastic shopping bags?
First United Methodist Church at 720 Demarest Avenue has acquired a special loom for weaving the plarn "plastic yarn" sleeping mats. Since it takes roughly 800 standard sized plastic shopping bags to make one mat, an andless supply of clean shopping bags is needed. Bags can be larger than a standard size but no garbage bags. They can be slightly smaller but no produce or bread bags, etc. Flattening the bags would be helpful but not necessary. There is a marked collection receptacle just inside the main entrance doors.
Bag donations can be delivered to First United Methodist Church during business hours - afternoons, Monday through Thursday, and Friday mornings - or on Sunday mornings between 9:30 a.m. and noon.
Plarn Sleeping Mats
Most of us have drawers overflowing with plastic grocery bags and no real plan for them.
We are transforming donated plastic bags into “plarn,” (plastic yarn). This plarn is then woven on handmade looms, crafted by our volunteers, to create sturdy, water-resistant sleeping mats. These mats are lightweight, easy to clean, and provide insulation from cold or damp ground. When disasters strike around the world, Midwest Mission sends these Plarn Sleeping Mats to offer comfort, dignity, and a safer place to rest for people facing displacement or crisis.
